Harvey says the major contaminants they have found are rust and dirt, as well as water and algae. "Algae is actually our biggest problem. It lives on water in the fuel and results in a dark-purplish sludge in the tank."Most of the tanks we cleaned are used for irrigation," adds Harvey. "That means they sit out in the middle of a field all year. The exposure to dirt and condensation is probably greater than with a tank sitting at the farmstead." In both of these efforts, the tanks were cleaned by using a Cim-Tek VII fuel recycling system. Country Energy has helped make these units available to local cooperatives through their KleanSweep program. Fuel is pulled from the bottom of the tank by a suction wand and circulated through a screen and filter element with a 10micron particle rating. Cleaned fuel is then returned to the storage tank.
